Abercrombie and Fitch was founded by David Abercrombie in 1892 as Abercrombie Co. Abercombie was then later joined by Ezra Fitch in 1900 which had brought the official name Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Abercrombie owned a samll shop and factory producing camping equipment in lower Manhattan. He is also a former prospector, miner, trapper and engineer. Fitch was a lawyer in Kingston, New York. He is one of Abercrombie's customers. Though he was successful in his career his chief interest was the outdoors.
Abercrombie and Fitch were ill matched. Futhermore, both men were hot-tempered. With many long and violent arguments, Abercrombie resigned in 1907 to return to manufacturing camping equipment. But this doesn't stop Fitch from dreaming big. He continued with other partners. Planned breath-taking strategies to push through the business no matter what happens. They almost bankrupted the company, but the coming flood of orders justified the expense. The reputation was then established.
Abercrombie and Fitch is the concluding first-class store for America's sporting. Oshman's Sporting Goods renewed the Abercrombie and Fitch name but turned its focus to more modern sporting goods after the chain went bankrupt in 1977. In 1988, The Limited, Inc., eliminated sporting goods entirely after acquiring the company. Later that time, Mike Jeffires took over the company and repositioned it as an aspirational youth apparel retailer.
